Altec Voice of the Theatre Product Line Circa 1975
© Altec Lansing Technologies

When Lansing Manufacturing was acquired by the Altec Service Corporation in 1941, they provided Altec with their first loudspeaker manufacturing capability.  Prior to that date, Altec was just in the service industry with no product line of its own.  The Lansing Manufacturing catalog immediately became the Altec Lansing catalog. The manufacturing plant continued to be the former Lansing facility at 6900 McKinley Avenue in Los Angeles until 1951.

Lansing Manufacturing brought to Altec the foundation of a product line that would set industry standards. The 287 and 801 compression drivers would evolve into the Altec 288 and 802 that would be sound industry mainstays for the next half century. During the five years (1941-1946) that James Lansing was at Altec, he would continue to expand that product line to include such innovative products as the 515 bass driver, 601/604 Duplex, and with John Hilliard, the Voice of the Theatre. Two of these products are profiled in detail as follows.
