Newbie Question - 2220A equivalent to D140?
Sorry if this is covered somewhere, but I couldn't find it by searching.
I'm a big Deadhead, in a Dead tribute band, going for that vintage 70's Dead sound... including lots of JBL Speakers. My research says that for bass (my instrument) they used a lot of D140s. I've just been given a pair of 2220As, which leads me to my question:
If I have the 2220As reconed to D140 specs (ribbed cone, aluminum center dome) will it sound the same and have similar T/S parameters?
Magnetic strength is different
D140 has stronger magnet.

The orignal D140F has more complient supension that the K/E.

The 2220 can do good bass only in large enclosures and normally horn types like 4530, 4550 or 4560. They are normally used in bass/midrange applications.
The 222* series with the paper dome is similar in characteristics to the D/K/E series with aluminum domes. Often, people find the aluminum dome gives brightness they like on bass and guitar, but the 222* series with the paper dome is smoother and preferred for PA and monitor speakers.
If you want to pop the drivers in small ported boxes, then the 140 version is preferable.
The E140 is similar to the 2225 and the D or K140 to the 2205. Any of those models will work well in ported boxes of 2 to 5 cubic feet.
I have original coned D140F speakers and K and E 140s. I would not give my original cone D140Fs for anything. If you want to 70's sound use the 140-F/K/E the aluminum done does extend the high end. You will not get the same sound with the paper center dome. John
