from auction description:
For sale is a pair of JBL C-51 Apollo loudspeakers. This is a vintage 2-way system made in the early 60’s during JBL’s golden age. They certainly don’t make them like this anymore. I believe the cabinet finish is called Danish Teak, but I’m not 100% sure. They are in very good cosmetic shape for being their age, and the grilles are also in good shape. One grille is missing the metal JBL horn logo, and there is the some wear and tear damage on the bottoms (see pictures). Each cabinet consists of an LE15-A 15” woofer, LE85 compression driver, HL91 horn/acoustic lens assembly, and the LX5 crossover network. They also come with the original literature pack that was provided with these, and they will be included in the deal (no selling them separately for extra profit. That’s what they came with and that’s the way they should be sold). Serial numbers are 54131 and 54132. These could easily be modified to a three-way system (S8) with the addition of a 075 ring radiator and the N7000 crossover. I thought about doing that but I couldn’t find the time to spare for that project. It’s an idea, anyway. The woofers had their surrounds replaced recently by Orange County Speaker Repair, and they did a great job. Everything works as it should. I am the second owner of this pair of loudspeakers but I am fast running out of room to store things, so they must go. I got these from a retired worker at JBL, who was the original owner. They have been cared for very well (in a non-smoking home), and were hooked up to a McIntosh tube amp. They sound great! Now for the down side. Because of their size, weight, and fragility, I will absolutely not ship these speakers. I do not want to run the risk of some freight company mishandling and damaging them, and having to deal with that mess. You can either make arrangements to pick them up in the Los Angeles area, or you can send your own shipper to pick them up and deliver them to you at your cost, of course. After they leave my house they will no longer be my responsibility, so please be aware of that. Because of their vintage age they are being sold as is, with no other guarantees expressed or implied. They will work as advertised, though, and I’m sure you will be pleased with them. These type of loudspeakers are getting harder and harder to find (especially in this condition), so do act now if you want them. I prefer payment through a US Postal Service money order. If you have any questions please ask BEFORE bidding, and do not bid unless you are prepared to follow through. Please don’t waste my time or yours. Thank you very much for looking.
P.S. – please see my other auction for a McIntosh MR71 FM tuner.

1950 D-1005 with D-1050 system
1950 D-1005 with D-1050 system in ebay auction
The originally primavera blonde finished D-1005 cabinet has been painted black (?!?). No serial number given for cabinet. Seller seems to be going along with my interpretation of the date codes, giving a July 1950 date to the 5007 numbered components and November 1950 to the 5011 serial numbered D175.
D130B serial number 5007 on both
D175 serial number 5011
N1200 crossover serial number 5007

Vintage JBL D1050 Speaker 1950
Offered is a JBL D1050 corner speaker. It consist of two D130B 32 ohm 15" woofers in series to make 16 ohms, it has a 175H tweeter with very rare multi-cell horn lense and N1200 / N1000 cross-over. The cabinet is original but it has been painted. Originally offered in prima-vera blonde, dark mahogany, and utility grey. Prima-vera blonde was the most expensive finish. This speaker has all components made in 1950. By the serial numbers used at that time. This was one of the last units made by Jim Lansing's personally before he died. Cones are original and so are the other components. Cones on both 15" drivers are perfect with no cracks or blems. These speakers are nearly mint 10/10 condition. Unfortunately the cabinet was painted black which covers the prima-vera blonde. Could be an easy fix by a cabinet shop to strip the paint.
Please don't ask to have components removed !!! it will be sold as complete speaker.
This speaker was originally purchased from Hal Cox in 1951.
Stayed in family till I purchased.
Hal Cox - Hal has allowed us to capture a sense of the time and personalities involved in the birth of the hi-fi phenomenon. Hal has been extremely generous with his time, in particular, allowing Steve Schell to document both his life and his collection of vintage audio equipment. As a personal friend of James B. Lansing, he has given us first hand insight into the personality of the man.
Dimensions are 34 1/2" x 17 1/2" x 50 1/2"High. Net weight 130.0 lbs/58.8kg.
The inside has the following early flatback components:
1 x 8 multi-cell horn with D-175 16 Ohms Driver. Measured DCR reads 4.0 Ohms.
2 x Jim Lansing D130B 32 Ohms 15" Woofers. Cone #130-202. Woofers are MINT. No holes, no tears, no rubs. Measured DCR of woofers read 6.0 Ohms.
WOOFER AND X-OVER NETWORK HAVE THE SAME SERIAL # = 5007
WHICH IS JULY 1950
HORN HAS SERIAL # 5011 WHICH = NOVEMBER 1950
JBL L100 Century Mint Serial 29654 & 29655
I understand the 39xxx serial numbers were built in 1972. Any information pertaining to these numbers would be greatly appreciated.

Can you also list, (or better yet post a picture of) the serial number of the 175 horn driver engraved in the black plastic plate on the back?
(The 509153 serial number on the side belongs to the 1217-1290 horn part of the 175DLH horn/driver set)

Do you have any paperwork that establishes the Sept 1959 purchase date? It would be great to have that documented here as well!
The date codes would seem to indicate that this system was assembled in September (09) of 1955. Of course late 1955 would have only about a year after the Hartsfield displaced this C31 as the very best speaker that JBL made.
The dual 32 ohm woofer system in the C31 wouldn't transplant easily into other speakers either, so it might have concievably sat in a store for years waiting for a buyer.
Your speaker is one of only a few that included the old date-code serial numbered components and the new sequential numbering on your 175 driver. Thanks very much for listing it here!
