Hi, my name is KidAltec and I'm a Altecaholic

It all started for me 30 plus years ago when I heard those damn 891As

And then it was the Santana IIs and the 714 Receiver

And then much later in life it was the Stonehenge IIs and IIIs

And then the 3370s and 3341s and Model 6s and now finally the Model 14s

And now I'm on the trail of the Holy Grail >>> Model 19s

CAN ANYONE OUT THERE HELP ME BEFORE I LOSE MY HAPPY HOME AND END UP LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER?????

PS: The van would be pulling a big trailer of course for all my ALTEC STUFF!

Welcome, KidAltec! There are folks here who live and breathe AllTechnical. Boy, are you in good company! Downside, the only help you'll get here will get you to the river sooner.

Great to see another member within a stone's throw. Ever been to Electronics Diversified?

You have a PM about a pair of 19's.

    1. JamminJersey for used components? I had bad experiences purchasing stuff from them. Improper packing, woofers arrived totally destroyed, Jammin Jersey said it wasnt their fault or responsibilty. Insurance paid for the order, but they sent 2 woofers face to face, in 1 box, and the woofers were completely destroyed, BOTH VC,s punched through center of cones, totally torn spiders, and one magnet was knocked completely off woofers frame and they didnt stand behind the sale. They told me its up to the insurance! JJ is a fish that stinks on ice!

    2. Great Plains Audio? Bill makes products brand new to factory spec. His work, and his repairs are impeccable, and he is fairly reasonably priced. Nice guy to talk to as well. If your going, go first class, buy GPA, buy NEW, and youll have great speakers when you have completed your project.

Sorry Convergence, no disrespect, but I totally say STAY AWAY from Jammin Jersey!

    Kid, Welcome to the Forum!

Just a tip for quick service at GPA, give them a call (best around 9:30AM CST). Bill would rather discuss your needs than chance a misinterpretation from email.

Many of the components in Altec's smaller consumer models were made by others, as in the case of your tweeter. I'm thinking that one was a CTS, but not for sure on that. While they occasionally come thru eBay, I'd suggest finding the nearest match in a current production unit, and replacing both of them at once. Parts Express and others should have a good equivalent (or better) for around $20 ea.

thanks moldyoldy ... it is just your standard throw away 4 inch tweeter ... very likely Altec just bought them from a supplier ... a good replacement tweeter should work just fine ... thanks to all for the help

    Most welcome!

If your old drivers have any OEM numbering, you can likely ID its' source. If the drivers were made to your spec as a custom contract lot, you bought all that were made just like it, and the only numbering applied would be your own. That was fairly expensive though, so in most cases, you bought whatever the manufacturer already had assembled that did the job, which could be (and often were) the same drivers the competition used. I've come across components shared by RCA and Lafayette, and there are probably others. These would have OEM numbering, in addition to your own. There's a recent thread with EIA codes to identify likely mfrs.

If you feel the need to replace like-for-like, you shouldn't have to watch Ebay too long to find some, if you know what you're looking for. In most cases, a new generic replacement is as good or better, but there are probably some exceptions to that, like if the network had been designed to suit a particular driver. Otherwise, just match the mounting, impedance, sensitivity, and bandwidth (going long an octave on the low side if possible), and don't feel you've done any disservice to your Altecs at all.
