"We bought the raw material as a thin sheet. It was a foam material, but
not the polyether or polyester foams that are used now. I don't
remember what family it came from. We made male and female metal tools
and heat formed the surrounds in house. The cool things about the
material were that it was quite light and that it had a ton of damping.
It is the best operating surround material I have ever encountered.
Unfortunately it had a very short and unpredictable average lifespan. I
know of speakers that went for 10 years and others that barely made it a
couple of years. We were getting killed on warranty costs and had to
switch to regular foam which was much longer lasting but no where near
    as well damped.

I am unaware of any successful rejuvenation method. I can't imagine
that brake fluid is a good idea because it is so aggressive but stranger
    things have happened."

Additional note - I know that JBL referred to it as a petro-chemical/organic based compound in certain documents.
People who make sound their business depend on JBL for their sound.
