Hi all, would like to know what things were missing in the 4350 that JBL built the 4355? Was it commercial users requesting changes or JBL just wanted to improve the 4350 and why did they wait so long.? Thanks.

Of course this is only speculation, but my guess is that after discontinuing the 2440 driver and replacing it with wider bandwidth 2441 driver they needed to re-engineer the system to work with the new driver. Since they needed to revisit the design they took the opportunity to make minor improvements to the design.

There are a few key differences:
1. Power Handling improved with the 4355 with the 2235 woofers
2. Adjustability by the Introduction of LPADs for 2441 and 2405
Thanks guys, that answers the question adequately.
My two cents since I do have a DIY 4350.
.
The difference between 4350 and 4355 is minor, the difference between woofers is not major, at least if these speakers are evaluated in residential settings where no one in his right mind would push these monsters to their limits and conclude that 2235’s can handle a little more power.
.
As for commercial users I know nothing about either monitors.
.
To me, if there is one major difference between 4350 & 4355, that difference is in the three way passive crossover, JBL 3107 used in 4350, this crossover just does not control the 2” compression driver properly, at certain loud volumes the 2440 completely overtakes the other two drivers, too overpowering for a lack of a better word.
There were four iterations is you check the studio monitor reference chart
The original 4350 has the 2230 woofers
4350A had the 2231A
4350B had the 2231H
4355 had the 2235H
Comparing the first and last iteration the 2235H has 2x power rating
Something else for the mix;
Quote George Augsperger.
“In the late 1960's, recording engineer Dave Hassinger introduced his "tight", "punchy", super-dry drum sound. At about that time, Bart Locanthi moved to Pioneer and developed a variant of the LE15A - the TL-1602.. A year or two later, to meet the demand for an even more rugged woofer, he designed the TL-1603. (I am not sure how the TL-1601 fits into the timeline.) The TL-1603 was, and continues to be, the most "bulletproof" 15-inch woofer of its kind. As an unforeseen bonus, it delivered a tighter bass sound than the LE15A family.
JBL Pro also felt the need for an upgrade to the LE15A. At my request, Ed May set to work on a new JBL woofer. First, he tested a variety of cone materials and settled on a very hard, stiff cone. Then, to get the right moving mass he added weight in the form of a copper ring attached to the voice coil tube. The result was the 2235. To my ears it may be the best-sounding 15-inch woofer ever made.”

I don’t know all the crossover details between the two but if the 2241 is allowed to run up and out with the 2405 augmenting that may be the reason for the increase in power handling on the top end.
The 2440 drops like a stone above 9kHz and the 2405 has to do all the rest, which it just can’t do with authority.
With the 2441 the 2405 comes in at 10kHz on an 18dB slope so the large format driver is doing more of the work. Big loud things like crash cymbals sound better to me on systems set up like this.
That’s just my two bits.
Barry.
If we knew what the hell we were doing, we wouldn't call it research would we.
Hi Barmy
That was 16 bit answer.
If one refers to Don’s lengthy history article attached to forums the reason for the introduction of the 2230 and the later iterations is clear and l won’t elaborate when it’s a good read.
Equally told was the research and engineering work done before and around the time the 2231H evolved into the 2235H.
Again a great read.
Thanks for the education.
Thanks for the education
I can't tell you how good my DIY 4355's sound. I have people over and they are astounded at how clear every instrument is and how they can distinguish each one. I am a happy camper although a little crowded in my living room.
