    Question Yet Another 511B ?

I have been a lurker on this forum for years and I finally have a question for you Altec gurus. Just to let you know my experience with Altec is unfortunately minimal. I've heard a couple systems here and there and seen pieces in audio museums but that is all. I am definately a horn fan.

A good friend has loaned me 511B horns and 902-8 Great Plains Audio drivers. I don't think he is getting them back whether I use them on this or another project.

Do you think this combo is good from 600 crossed very steep and running out to its upper limits? My hearing starts crapping out a little past 16khz. I'm also not a super tweeter fan. Eventually I will cross at 800 with second order xover but that is down the road abit. I am just starting out on a project and if I can get by without a tweeter that would be wonderful. The specs look great and the horn sounds great but I was wondering what your real world experience says.

    Thanks

I've used the 511-902 combo and I think it sounds great. I used many horns over the years and the 511 was one of my favorites, better sounding IMO than Edgar saladbowls and various EV, McCauley, PAudio and JBL horns I used. And 902s are great sounding drivers, I listen to them on 811s every day.

Of course you have to judge for yourself but I think you're on the right track.

Zilch, Thanks fascinating thread. It is abit over my head in spots but very good.

Tom, I was wondering if this combo was just too good to be true. If there were any issues I guessed this would be the place to find ou.

I may need another pair of these

    Thanks

Works like a charm and much better than expected. The thread Zilch post took some time to read but well worth it. Thanks.

It is a Jubilee clone but it is very very close to the original. Just listened to some tracks last night that I had heard on the Jubilee before and the only problem is my room. The bass is prodigious. I hope to do some measurements next month. I have software but no mic yet. The 902 511b is a pleasant surprise.

Those look like Richards. The man with the foot on the volume knob.

That K402 is something else. I don't have the dough for that monster horn. It will be a while before I give it a shot.

Where may the plans for the Jubilee LF horn be found?

Check the performance measurements on the Jubilee tractrix horn. It should be deployed three-way.

Consider JBL 2352 instead for two-way....

I did not build the clones. That sort of talent is not in my hands. If I did I'd have all manners of bass horns. There are many threads on the Klipsch forums with info for building these with pics and measurements. The trick is getting the right drivers.

Most of the guys are using 402 are using actives with some eq. There is also a low end boost that yields incredible much lower bass performance. It is incredible but I don't remember exactly what the setting was.

The 2352 looks very good. My long term plan is to have several crossovers and horns to use with the LF.

511B they didn't measure above 8 kHz, but the trend is clear:

2352's not all that good in the vertical, but with respect to in-room power response, it's the horizontal that most matters:

The 402 is described as modified tractrix.

Thanks for the info on 511B and 2352. I hadn't seen that doc on the 511B. I rather like it with the 902 gpa driver. It may not be the ideal driver and horn combo but I really like it so far.

Indeed, and that's why it beams, and requires the supplemental HF driver and horn, IMHO.

    How 'bout this:
