... of an 18 inch W-horn (1977)
D.B. Keele: K151 or 2240H "W" Horn
www.geocities.com/loudspeakerguru/Keele_W_Box.doc
Huge W-horn for one JBL 18 inch driver, back chamber as bass reflex enclosure.
___________stacking 8 JBL «W»-boxes in a 4 x 2 configuration will provide true horn loading down to 40Hz.

The famous SCHMACKS-horn I redesigned to a W-horn, the choosen speaker EV SP8C was right in the middle of the front panel. The horn showed good results.
(One example of a SCHMACKS-horn is described here: http://www.speaker-online.de/bauen/naumann/ )
I did not build the Keele W-horn, which is too big IMHO. And I am not overjoyed by an 18 incher in a horn. In a project course I choose four bass horns, each with a 15 inch high efficient light cone.

These 4 horns can be arranged like a W-Horn which goes easily down to 45 Hz.
This just mentioned bass horn seems to be completely underestimated, more details are here: http://www.egbeck.de/15bhorn0.htm
The response is very flat and the speaker works in a very "protected mode". We cranked it up with ca. 400 W per speaker. The bass was very, very clean and only the amp showed some restrictions (clipping).

Well, I should have the bass bin delivered on June 5th by my buddy who is driving down for my daughters wedding reception ( she got married last weekend in the British Virgin Islands). I made a spot on the front wall for it and am rewiring things now so that the Crown K2 amp will supply all of it's 2500 watts to the bass bin. I bought (2) JBL 2226 woofers today to install in the cabinet....my first JBL product.
I'll post up a pic when I get them installed.
Don't think I have posted up since I had my bass bin delivered a couple of weeks ago. But here is some pics of it with the 70 year old dirt on it.
I got it all cleaned up and applied some Exterior Semi-Gloss paint to it.
I got my JBL 2226H drivers that were recently reconditioned.
The deflector plates are really close to the woofer opening
"Dizzy" is checking it out to see if he can get inside of it somehow.
Woofers installed.
This is it's final resting spot although it is pictured on a carpeted dolly. I'll be installing some furniture "sliders" so that it will only be 1/2" off of the floor. Spacing worked out good for the projection screen and cabinet above. You can see one of the EV 18" subwoofer cabinets just in front of the bass bin ( to the left ).
Both subwoofers will go in the loft like the other one.
I'll post up some numbers that we will be taking with a new PC based measurement system we recently bought soon.
Very Cool !
& Very Nice !
Good choice on the 2226 woofers
I'm grateful that this cab didn't end up in the dumpster (FWmyopinionIW)
You've done a great job at breathing some new life back into that dusty old soldier
>< cheers
Wow!
It's really come up very nicely.
Good on you....
I might be deaf, but I can still hear da bells! (Quasimodo)
.... Oh, and the Kick Drum.
That’s a whopper of HUGE one and the cat is most curious about it bet it was sniffing at for hours and looking for way in though hole too catnap. What the cat’s name?
I got the testing done today on the bass bin. Rolled it out to the edge of the garage with the mic about 6ft out in front of the mouth opening, hooked up the PC measurement system directly to the Crown Macro Reference amplifier.
This is the frequency response curve.
Looks like Steve Shell was pretty close as response falls off at 50hz or so.
Rolled it back into the garage in the corner to get another reading which we took readings on the LH, middle, and RH sides of the garage and then averaged them on the PC which looks like this.
Fairly smooth up to about 500hz or so.
Then we took another standard one.
Looks like it will do pretty good crossed over at 50hz to my subs and crossed over at 300 hz to my main speakers.
