would anyone have more information on the Altec Big Red Monitors. I know they used 604 drivers and the Mastering Labs xover. I would like to know the size and whether they had an additional woofer.

I own a pair.
The size of th cabinet s 30"x23"18.
The "Super red" version had an extra 15" woofer in a much bigger sealed box.
Thanks Guy!
I've wondered about that Mastering labs crossover. Is it sealed so that you cannot see the components and wiring?Originally posted by Guy L

you can find the mastering labs crossover schematics on the soundpractices web pages under:

OK. Looks like one would have to make the inductor that is tapped at 10 percent.
Thanks,
David
think that could be easily done by winding off a standard inductor til you get to the inductance of the lower part, apply a tap and rewind the wire.
BTW: I modeled this in SPICE and I´m pretty sure that the schematics is a bit misleading. I assume that the lower half of the tapped inductor has the lower inductance not as the picture may imply.
(which would be the other way round)
The components and wiring can be seen. I'll have my camera back from service, within a week, and try to post pics.Originally posted by speakerdave

Hi Guy
so where is your camera
WOW! 6 years in the shop!

Here's the M.L. network ( since the original link posted above, no longer works ) .
And here's a look at the way the crossover was laid out inside it's box . ( I know it's not the best pic )

Hello . can advise this crossover will be good for Altec 604 E - 8 ohm ?

Sorry, I don't really know if this network is meant for 8 ohm drivers .Hello . can advise this crossover will be good for Altec 604 E - 8 ohm ?
A quick glance at the values of the LC components within this schematic suggest that it's meant to mate a 16 ohm woofer with an 8 ohm compression driver .
The best way to find out is to find someone with the necessary ( crossover ) modeling software to explore a few different impedance ( loads ) using this network ( & then take a look at the resulting voltage drives to confirm that the LF & HF portions, crossover in the neighborhood of 1500 hz ) .
<> cheers
The Mastering Labs crossover was designed originally for the 604E which was nominally 16 ohms. By the time Audio Marketing got the license and started manufacturing Big Reds the 604E was replaced by the 6048G... so they ordered 16 ohm versions of 604G and later K's and put a sticker on the back calling them 604E2's.
