Looks like JBL pulled out of retirement its front loaded horns for a new theater application.
Didn't know nor ever saw the 1986 46 series Theater system models you referred to. Then i learned something new, great. In fact its the first time i actually see a JBL factory application of the 2225 in a front loaded horn. Thanks for that. Seen it before, as 2205 replacement, in rear loaded horns (4520/4530) but not in front loading ones.
JBL must have modified the 4560/4550 type cabs used in those 46 series so the 2225 cone doesn't strike the horn's throat since it has longer Xmax than some other previously specified drivers. A few older woofers mentioned were already at risk of seeing their cone strike the front loaded horn's throat with ambitious drive. Regards,
