5235 for 2235's

I would like to go active with my 2235's added onto my current setup which is 3-way passive. I'm using 2205's on the bottom, 2420's on PT waveguides, (6 1/2 x 12) and 2405's The crossovers are custom made crossing at 800 and 7k. I just got a line on a 5235 with 250 hz cards. would this be a good match? --Thanks -- Jaybird

I don't think it's ideal, but it could work. The easiest thing to do might be to get the 5235 and try it. You can obtain or make substitute cards for other frequencies. If you like your present setup for the top three elements, you might try crossing over to the 2235's at 80 or 100 Hz and use them as true subwoofers. The resistor and capacitor loads for the different frequencies are available at JBL Pro in the 5235 manual.

I think you are going to end up with a lot of big cabinets, though, and for that and other reasons, I would consider changing the midbass driver from the 2205 to something smaller and more compliant. The 2202 and the 2122 would both be preferable. In the case of either, the 250 Hz crossover point would work well. Of course they might require modification of your existing crossover at 800 Hz.

The 2205 is a general use woofer that is designed to cover the range from about 40 Hz to the high hundreds acceptably well for SR. The 2235 is a general use woofer covering the range of 30Hz to the mid-hundreds very well for hi fi and monitor applications. If you are going to start adding drivers and crossover points, that will automatically lead to a compromise of clarity in the presentation, and the only real reason for accepting that compromise is to be able to use drivers that are specialized for the ranges chosen; these will give offsetting advantages--clarity, detail, balanced power response, that you will not get using multiple similar drivers even if they are used over different frequency ranges.

No...you should be able to find or make a pair of 800HZ cards...crossing at 250 is too low...and will destroy the 2420's

The way I read his post (six months ago) was that he planned to add the 2235's on below the 2205's.
